Refined elegance seconds from the beach
This quarter is made up of the three or four grand streets back from the beach between the Old Town to the east, The Boulevard Gambetta to the west and the sea to the South. The Carre d'Or, or Golden Square, is prime Nice real estate.
The centre piece of this area is the famous Negresco Hotel, known the world over for its opulent rooms and public areas. This landmark building was the main catalyst for the very upmarket buildings that were constructed in the area in the 1880's to the 1930's.
No expense was spared on this area by the bourgeois French, British and Russians who constructed the majority of it. Marble staircases, glass conservatories and rooftop terraces lend testament to the area's gilded heritage.
Well-healed locals mix with affluent expatriates and tourists in the Carre d'Or and the area is well known for its recession proof investment and renting potential - because of its proximity to the beach, its many fine buildings and its proximity to hundreds of restaurants and shops. Nothing in the area is more than a minute or two from the beach, casinos or Promenade.
Most properties in the Carre d'Or are large and in good condition. Two bedroom apartments complete with parquet floors and high ceilings start at around €400,000. Studios and one-bedroom apartments are available for around half that figure. Larger properties with gardens, guardians, terraces and numerous bedrooms start at around €700,000. The area also includes the world-class shopping zone on the pedestrianised Rue de
